Help Your Board Finish Strong and Start Inspired

Because fundraising success isn’t built in panic—it’s built in gratitude, reflection, and a little sparkle.

Hello, hello, hello — it’s that magical time of year again!

Before we race into another year, here’s a little secret: how you close the year sets the tone for how you start the next one.

As we head toward the end of the year, I’m sure your plans for next year are already taking shape. But before you sprint ahead, let me ask you this: Have you truly reflected on this past year? Have you noticed where you improved, acknowledged the progress you made, and yes — actually celebrated your successes?

It’s always easier to focus on what didn’t go as planned. That’s our brain’s built-in negative bias. Neuroscientists tell us that negative experiences imprint almost instantly, while positive ones need 12–20 seconds of attention to truly register. No wonder we default to what fell short instead of what went well.

But now is the moment to interrupt that pattern.

Maybe you didn’t raise the $1 million you hoped for, or didn’t surpass last year’s donor count, or didn’t hit every goal. Yes, those moments hold lessons. But even more important are the victories — the ways you grew, what you strengthened, and what your organization accomplished despite limited time, resources, and capacity.

Research backs this up:

  • Teams that regularly celebrate achievements show up to 21% higher effectiveness and stronger collaboration.

  • People who pause to reflect on what went well improve performance by 23%, according to Harvard Business School.

  • And gratitude practices — including celebrating wins — raise productivity and engagement by up to 50%.

In other words: Celebration isn’t fluff. It’s fuel

And What About Your Board?

And your board—yes, those amazing humans juggling their own holiday chaos—can play a huge role in finishing strong and stepping into 2026 inspired, confident, and ready to fundraise with ease.

Step 1: Celebrate Before You Strategize

We’re often so focused on what’s next that we forget to pause and say, “Wow, look what we did!”

Start your December/January board meeting with a celebration moment. Ask:

  • What are we proud of this year?

  • Which donor stories made our hearts swell?

  • What surprised us about our community’s generosity?

Even if the year felt bumpy, there’s always something worth celebrating—big or small.

And science agrees with us!

  • Teams that receive consistent recognition show up to a 22% increase in productivity.

  • Organizations that celebrate success experience a 31% drop in turnover (because appreciation keeps people connected).

  • And here’s my favorite — 92% of people are more likely to repeat a positive action after being recognized for it.

So yes, your board’s celebration energy isn’t just feel-good — it’s strategic.

Make it fun: play “Board Bingo” (celebrate who brought in a new connection, thanked a donor, or shared an impact story). Gratitude fuels growth — and it’s contagious.

Step 2: Say a Proper Thank-You (Again!)

I know, I know — we talked about gratitude in November. But here’s the thing: you can’t overdose on appreciation.

Encourage your board to make one last round of thank-you calls or notes before the year ends.

A short, heartfelt message like:

“Hi [Donor Name], just wanted to say how much we appreciate your support this year. Your generosity helped us [impact]. Wishing you a joyful holiday season!”

It’s 30 seconds that can build loyalty for years. Donors who receive a thank-you call are up to 40% more likely to give again.

And best of all — it’s one of the easiest ways for your board to engage in fundraising without ever asking for money.

Step 3: Reflect with Intention

Before you charge ahead, take a deep breath and look back.

Ask your board:

  • What did we learn about our donors this year?

  • Where did we see growth—in giving, relationships, or teamwork?

  • What made fundraising feel easier (and what didn’t)?

Research shows that reflection is a powerhouse for growth:

  • Teams that regularly reflect on their work perform significantly better than those that don’t.

  • Reflection improves shared learning, memory, and collaboration — key ingredients for effective boards.

  • And according to organizational studies, team-based reflection increases motivation and buy-in.

This isn’t about perfection — it’s about clarity. Because clarity creates confidence, and confidence creates action.

You can even make reflection a ritual: add a “One Win, One Lesson” round to every board meeting. It’s quick, meaningful, and builds momentum.

Step 4: Sprinkle Some Vision Magic

Now the fun part — look ahead! Invite your board to dream a little:

“What impact do we want to celebrate next December?”

Then, reverse-engineer it. What mindset, relationships, and actions will make that happen?

Here’s the secret sauce: When boards dream together, they commit together. Reflection builds insight — celebration builds energy — and together, they spark commitment.

Step 5: Keep the Warmth Flowing into January

Before everyone disappears into cocoa and cookies, set one simple January goal:

  • Send a New Year “welcome back” message to donors.

  • Share one story of impact at your first 2026 board meeting.

  • Review your board fundraising calendar together.

Small, consistent steps now save big stress later. (And who doesn’t love less stress and more ease?)

A Sprinkle of Sparkle

December isn’t about doing more — it’s about ending with heart and beginning with hope.

When you celebrate and reflect, you don’t just close the year; you elevate it. Because when your board understands the power of gratitude, reflection, and shared success, fundraising becomes lighter, brighter, and way more joyful.

So take a breath, pour yourself something festive (I vote cocoa… with marshmallows), and toast yourself, your board, and your mission.

You’ve done incredible work this year — and next year’s story is already waiting for its next chapter.

Thank you for being part of this community of nonprofit changemakers. You bring the heart, the humor, and the humanity that make this sector shine. Here’s to more ease, joy, and sparkle in the year ahead — cheers to you and your unstoppable board! 🥂
