The Least Flashy Fundraising Idea That Might Change Everything

I know.

This isn’t shiny.

It’s not revolutionary.

There’s no new funnel, framework, or fancy acronym.

And yet… it’s efficient, affirming, human, and surprisingly uplifting. Which, honestly, is exactly what many of us need.

I keep hearing the same concerns everywhere I go:

Stewardship matters.

Donor retention is slipping.

We need to stay in touch with donors.

All true. And often overwhelming.

So let’s make this easier.

One Simple Habit

Imagine this:

Every weekday, you call one donor.

That’s it. ONE.

You don’t need a script.

You don’t need an agenda.

You don’t need to ask for money.

Most days, you’ll leave a voicemail. And that’s perfect.

Your message is simple:

  • Thank you.

  • One thing that was accomplished this week, this month, or this year.

  • A warm reminder that they matter.

If you did this 5 days a week for 40 weeks, you would have reached 200 donors.

Two hundred people who heard your voice.

Two hundred people who felt remembered.

Two hundred moments of connection.

That’s stewardship.

When You Actually Reach Them

Every now and then, a donor will answer. When they do, resist the urge to rush.

Ask a question.

Learn something about them.

Listen.

Those conversations are gold. Not because they lead to immediate gifts, but because they remind us why people give in the first place. And because your time is valuable take at most 20 minutes out of your day IF you reach a donor.

Now… Add the Board

Here’s where it gets really interesting.

Imagine if half your board joined in.

Each board member commits to calling one donor a week for 40 weeks.

That’s 40 donors per board member.

No asking.

Just gratitude, curiosity, and connection.

What happens?

  • Board members feel affirmed and useful.

  • Fundraising becomes human instead of scary.

  • They begin to understand donors as people, not checkbooks.

  • And stewardship stops being an abstract concept and becomes a lived experience.

This isn’t flashy fundraising.

It’s relationship-building at its most honest.

And sometimes, the quiet ideas are the ones that change the culture.

One call.

One voice.

One donor at a time.

This kind of stewardship doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when organizations are intentional, supported, and willing to keep things human.

Through my work blends data, storytelling, mindset, and imperfect action, helping organizations strengthen donor relationships, activate their boards, and build the internal capacity to sustain and grow their impact over time.

I’ll continue sharing insights, ideas, and gentle nudges like this here on LinkedIn.

Because fundraising doesn’t have to feel heavy to be effective. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Stop Pushing Your Board. Start Aligning Them.

If you’re a nonprofit leader or board member who knows fundraising matters but feels stuck, uneasy, or tired of pushing harder, you’re not alone.

I help leaders and boards build fundraising confidence by reframing how fundraising works and how boards show up. My signature talk, Your Board Can Fundraise. Let Me Show You How., shifts fundraising from stressful and avoided to more human, aligned, and doable, while strengthening donor relationships for the long term.

This isn’t about pressure. It’s about clarity, shared responsibility, and mindset shifts, grounded in neuroscience, that make fundraising more sustainable over time.

If you’re ready to move from reactive fundraising to a calmer, more confident approach, let’s talk. Schedule a 20-minute call to explore what alignment could look like for your board.
